AYRES & GRACES
Step back into the contrasting worlds of Baroque Paris and London as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra brings its celebrated program Ayres & Graces to your community in 2026.
This musical journey begins at a Parisian tennis court come royal theatre, where Lully's majestic ouverture from Cadmus et Hermione sets the scene for an age of unparalleled French elegance moulded by Louis XIV and his court. The delicate art of composers like Marais, Hotteterre, and François Couperin also flourished in intimate salons and grand theatrical spectacles. Then cross the Channel to discover London's more eclectic musical character; from Purcell's expressive theatre music to infectious country dances and Handel's glorious synthesis of it all.
Under the direction of Principal Baroque Flute / Recorder Melissa Farrow, our ensemble of specialist early music performers will guide you through this tale of two cities, revealing how geography, politics, and personality shaped musical style. Experience the wit, grace, and expressiveness that made this era's music irresistible to audiences then and now.
